A mobile court has fined a man Tk.1 lakh for illegally extracting sand from the Nabaganga River in Kalia Upazila, Narail.

The local administration conducted the operation on Thursday afternoon in the river's Parbhombag Balumahal area. Acting on reports that dredgers were being used to extract and sell sand outside the officially leased boundaries the Assistant Commissioner (Land) Sraboni Biswas led the drive. A team from the Baradia Naval Police Outpost assisted the local administration during the raid.

During the operation Md. Golam Maula was caught violating the Balumahal and Soil Management Act. The mobile court found him guilty of illegal sand extraction and immediately imposed and collected a fine of Tk 1 lakh.

Following the raid Assistant Commissioner Sraboni Biswas issued a strong warning to environmental offenders and stating that the upazila administration will continue to run regular public-interest campaigns to stop illegal sand mining.
