Rail traffic was temporarily suspended in Rajarhat Upazila after a train collided with a motorcycle on Thursday afternoon. No injuries were reported.
The incident occurred around 3:00 pm when the Ramna Commuter Local Train (Down-133), travelling from Kurigram to Rangpur, hit a motorcycle parked beside the railway line near Rajarhat Technical and Commercial College. The motorcycle was crushed and completely damaged.
Following the collision, the train’s engine developed a mechanical problem after its main reservoir pipe opened. The locomotive driver stopped the train near the Rajarhat Land Office, causing panic among passengers and forcing rail authorities to halt traffic on the route for several hours.
Eyewitnesses said the motorcycle was parked dangerously close to the tracks when the moving train struck it. Railway officials quickly moved in to control the situation and ensure passenger safety.
Train Director Md Kibria said initial inspections showed damage to the engine’s main reservoir pipe and several footrests. “The train cannot be operated with this engine. We will move it using an alternative rake,” he said.
Rajarhat Station Master Suman Mia of Bangladesh Railway said train movement was disrupted temporarily. Efforts were underway to clear the line, but operations could not resume by 6:00 pm as the replacement engine had not yet arrived.
Railway authorities urged the public not to park vehicles near railway tracks, warning that such negligence poses serious risks to life and transport safety.
