A fishing trawler capsized off Cox's Bazar's Nazirartek coast early Thursday with killing two fishermen and leaving two others missing at sea.
The accident occurred near the western part of the Sonadia Channel, adjacent to Nazirartek when sudden turbulent weather struck the Bay of Bengal. The deceased were identified as Faiz Ahmed and Saiful Islam both from Kutubjom area in Maheshkhali Upazila. Nurul Alam and Muhib Ullah also from Kutubjom, remain missing after being swept away by rough waves.
According to local sources the fishermen had set out Tuesday night aboard a trawler owned by Faridul Alam a Kutubjom resident for deep-sea fishing. The vessel capsized Thursday morning after being caught in a sudden storm near the Sonadia Channel.
Nearby fishermen launched a rescue operation immediately after the incident. While the bodies of Faiz Ahmed and Saiful Islam were recovered and the search continues for the two still missing.
Maheshkhali Police Station OC Abdus Sultan confirmed the incident, saying the trawler was destroyed by sudden inclement weather. He said some fishermen survived by staying afloat while four others drowned two bodies have been recovered so far and efforts are underway to rescue the remaining two.
