US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday that Chinese President Xi Jinping will visit the United States on September 24 to hold high-level talks centered on artificial intelligence (AI).
The upcoming visit builds upon diplomatic ties established earlier this year when the two leaders met during Trump’s trip to China. While in Beijing, Trump formally invited the Chinese president to the White House.
"President Xi is coming over on September 24th, and we talked about it artificial intelligence when I was over in Beijing and we'll be talking about it again" Trump confirmed.
To ensure the summit is productive, extensive diplomatic groundwork is already underway. On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held discussions with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The two officials focused on identifying key areas of cooperation to guarantee a "very positive visit" between the two global leaders.
This high-profile meeting highlights the increasing intersection of geopolitics and emerging technologies as both nations seek to navigate the global future of artificial intelligence.
