Israeli airstrikes killed at least 40 people in southern Lebanon on Saturday, marking a significant escalation and a reported violation of the standing ceasefire. Local health officials confirmed 13 others, including children, were injured in the raids.
Prior to the strikes, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) issued urgent evacuation orders for residents in nine southern Lebanese villages.
In response, Hezbollah claimed responsibility for over 20 retaliatory operations. The group targeted several towns in northern Israel using a combination of rockets, artillery, and drones. The IDF confirmed three Israeli soldiers were injured during these attacks.
This surge in violence comes just days before high-level diplomatic efforts are set to resume. The US State Department announced that Israel and Lebanon will engage in a new round of talks in Washington on May 14 and 15, aimed at stabilizing the region.
