Russia has described the United States’ recent stance on Iran as a “miserable defeat,” following reports that Washington and Israel agreed to a set of conditions proposed by Tehran and paused military escalation.
Speaking to Sputnik Radio on Wednesday (April 8), Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said the US approach had failed.
She criticized what she described as aggressive rhetoric and strategy from Washington. According to her, statements suggesting imminent victory and increased pressure did not succeed and instead worsened tensions.
Zakharova reiterated Russia’s position that the situation should be resolved through political and diplomatic means, calling for an immediate halt to what she termed “aggression” against Iran.
Earlier, on Tuesday, Donald Trump announced a temporary pause, saying the US would “hold off on bombing and attacking Iran for two weeks.” The pause follows weeks of escalating conflict.
Tensions have remained high since United States and Israel carried out joint strikes on Iran on February 28. According to reports, more than 1,340 people have been killed.
In response, Iran launched drone and missile attacks targeting Israel and locations in Jordan, Iraq, and several Gulf countries hosting US military bases. Iran has also imposed restrictions on shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, raising concerns over global trade routes.
Russia has welcomed the announcement of a two-week ceasefire and urged all parties to pursue dialogue to prevent further escalation.
