Tarique Rahman Calls for National Unity After Landmark Election Victory

After winning the 13th National Assembly elections in a landslide victory, BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has invited everyone to unite in building the country, facing the media for the first time.

He made this call at a press conference held at the ballroom of the Intercontinental Hotel in the capital at 3:30 pm on Saturday (February 14).

In his official reaction after the victory, Tarique Rahman said, "I would like to invite everyone to build the country. We are all one in the interest of the country. Unity is our strength, division is weakness."

He congratulated the common people of the country and said that an accountable government is going to be formed in the country through direct public votes. He also congratulated the 51 political parties that participated in the elections.

Terming the victory as a victory of the people of the country and democracy, Tarique Rahman said, "We must respect the united decision of the people. If the government and the opposition work in the interest of the people of the country in the same way, your thoughts and opinions will help us build the country."

The press conference was informed that BNP won 209 seats alone in the general elections held on February 12. The party is going to ascend to state power for the fourth time by winning more than two-thirds of the seats in the 300-seat parliament. Tarique Rahman himself is going to take charge as the new head of government by winning from Dhaka-17 and Bogra-6 seats.

At the same event, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said that liberal democracy has won through this election. He called for strengthening the hands of young leader Tarique Rahman and building a peaceful Bangladesh.

According to party sources, the oath-taking of the newly elected members of parliament will be held in the next two or three days. After that, BNP will take over the responsibility of forming the cabinet and running the government as soon as possible. Numerous domestic and foreign journalists were present at the press conference.
