Bangladesh and Myanmar Push for Border Trade and Rohingya Repatriation

Bangladesh Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muqtadir and Myanmar Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe met in Dhaka to discuss expanding bilateral trade strengthening connectivity and accelerating Rohingya repatriation.

The meeting focused on leveraging the countries' geographical proximity to boost economic ties. Key proposals included reopening long-suspended border trade, establishing direct maritime links to significantly reduce transport costs and exploring liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports. Both sides also emphasized expanding trade in agriculture fisheries pharmaceuticals, and frozen foods through stronger business-to-business engagement.

A critical agenda item was the Rohingya crisis. Bangladesh urged Myanmar to ensure the safe, voluntary and dignified return of the forcibly displaced Rohingya stressing the need for immediate visible progress. In response Ambassador Kyaw Soe Moe confirmed that Myanmar authorities are currently verifying the repatriation list and will advance the process once security and ground conditions improve.

Minister Muqtadir reaffirmed Bangladesh’s commitment to strengthening relations with its neighbors through mutual trust and economic cooperation. He noted that the government will coordinate with other ministries to streamline trade transport and border connectivity issues. To drive these initiatives forward, both nations agreed to hold regular joint committee meetings and aim to finalize a proposed shipping agreement in the near future.
