Power Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud has hailed the Rural Electrification Board (REB) as the most successful institution under his ministry. Speaking at a view-exchange meeting on Monday, the Minister noted that the REB remains a landmark achievement linked to the country’s agricultural revolution and rural economic development.
Addressing headquarters staff and General Managers from 80 Palli Bidyut Samitys (PBS), the Minister emphasized that the REB’s operational model is a proven success. "There is no need for further experimentation with this model," he stated, while directing officials to ensure that underperforming Samitys are transitioned into profitable entities. He also urged officials to prioritize and strengthen customer relations.
The meeting was chaired by REB Chairman Major General SM Zia-ul-Azim. State Minister for Power Anindya Islam Amit attended as a special guest, highlighting that the REB is a unique example of an institution running successfully through cross-subsidies without government aid.
“Public satisfaction is the top priority for this government,” the State Minister said. He instructed officials to be transparent with the public regarding load shedding and technical issues to maintain trust.
The REB was established in 1977 via ordinance to bridge the quality-of-life gap between urban and rural Bangladesh. Chairman Major General SM Zia-ul-Azim reaffirmed the board’s commitment to advancing the rural electrification program in alignment with government goals.
