Tareena Shakil, the first British woman convicted of joining the Islamic State (IS), has remarkably rebranded herself as a social media influencer. Now 36, Shakil boasts 50,000 TikTok followers, sharing dating advice and self-worth content while largely keeping her complicated past out of the spotlight.

The Journey to Syria: In 2014, attempting to escape a toxic marriage and chaotic personal life, Shakil was groomed online and traveled to Syria with her one-year-old son.

The Escape: Realizing she had made a grave mistake, she bravely escaped IS territory after less than three months by bribing a taxi driver and running across the Turkish border.

The Consequences: Upon returning to the UK, she was arrested, separated from her son, and sentenced to six years in prison for terror offenses.

Rehabilitation: Shakil engaged heavily in deradicalization programs during her incarceration. She has since served her time, rebuilt a relationship with her son, and works steady administrative jobs.

Current Status: Though she will remain under police monitoring until 2034, Shakil is using her second chance to build a new life online, hoping her story proves that people can survive and overcome profound mistakes.
