The increased storage rent for containers at Chattogram Port has been suspended until December 31. The port authority has suspended the increased storage rent for full container loads or FCL containers imported by the same importer. At the same time, the additional rent for FCL containers at the ICD in Kamalapur, Dhaka has also been suspended. The port authority said that this decision has been taken considering the convenience of consumers during Ramadan.
It is learned that the port authority has increased the storage rent for FCL containers at Chittagong Port and Kamalapur ICD in Dhaka by four times since March this year. This charge is imposed so that importers unload the imported containers quickly. If the container is not unloaded within the stipulated 4-day free time after unloading the ship, a new store rent is set at $24 for every 20-foot long container for the first 7 days, $96 per day for the next 13 days, and $192 per day thereafter.
Although the authorities took this decision to reduce container congestion and speed up the unloading process from the port, users expressed their anger from the beginning. In view of this, it was suspended for two months in two phases from August 13. This time it has been extended until December 31. Chittagong Port Authority Secretary Mohammad Omar Faruk said, "The new tariff has been introduced, so we have suspended the additional tariff so that there is no impact on consumers and so that importers and exporters do not face additional pressure." He said, we definitely do not want to take the increased store rent. If importers unload their imported goods within the stipulated time, they do not have to pay this additional charge. We basically impose increased store rent on importers to expedite the clearance of goods.
