The Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) have arrested 11 individuals in connection with an armed motorcycle convoy and an extortion attempt at a factory in Tongi.
According to police, on the afternoon of June 28, approximately 100 people riding 50 to 60 motorcycles surrounded Faiza Button and Zipper Ltd. in the Pagar BSCIC Fakir Market area. Many in the convoy were carrying locally-made weapons.
After initially being stopped by security guards, eight to ten individuals forced their way into the facility. They confronted administrative officials, blocked the removal of goods, and demanded Tk 20 lakh in extortion. They also threatened local businessman Md. Nuruzzaman Jamal and his associates.
The incident sparked major public concern after a video went viral on social media. The footage showed the massive motorcycle convoy outside the factory, with a teenager on the back of one bike openly brandishing a long, locally-made weapon.
Following an analysis of CCTV footage, Tongi East Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Tuhin confirmed the arrest of three suspects on July 1: Tawhidul Islam Sajeeb (35), Md. Roni Khan (39), and Md. Monowar Hossain (28).
During follow-up raids on July 2, police arrested eight more suspects: Md. Riaz alias Rajan (30), Jahangir Sheikh (27), Zahir (33), Bayzid (29), Rajib Hasan (29), Hossain (34), Md. Russell (28), and Md. Sagar Nayan (20).
A formal case has been filed regarding the incident, naming 19 people—including Tongi East Jubo Dal member secretary Nazmul Hossain Mandal—and accusing 70 to 80 unidentified individuals.
GMP Additional Commissioner (Crime and Ops) Mohammad Belayet Hossain stated that all arrested suspects were sent to jail via the court on Thursday. Police operations are ongoing to arrest the remaining culprits, including the teenager seen displaying the weapon.
