Two people died after a fire broke out in a 14-storey residential building in Dhaka’s Katabon early Saturday. The blaze started around 1:05 am in two flats on the 12th floor of Al-Baraka Tower on Elephant Road, according to Fire Service and Civil Defence duty officer Rafi Al Farooq. The first firefighting unit arrived within seven minutes of the alert.

Six units from the Palashi Barracks and Siddik Bazar fire stations worked together to bring the flames under control by 3:08 am. The fire was fully extinguished at 5:40 am.

Firefighters pulled two people from the building and rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared them dead on arrival. The victims were identified as Johny Mia, 25, and Abdul Salam, 19.
