An unidentified 80-year-old man, found abandoned in a Khulna market, has been rescued and hospitalized following a social media outcry.
The elderly man, who is unable to speak, had been lying at the Kashimnagar market in Kapilmuni for several days. Local sources reported that two individuals in a van abandoned him near the Kashimnagar Jame Mosque's goat market shortly before Eid-ul-Fitr. While locals provided him with basic food and water, he remained largely neglected until his plight went viral online.
Upon learning of the situation, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury coordinated a rescue operation on Saturday afternoon, April 11.
Kapilmuni Union Parishad officials and residents first moved the man to Kapilmuni Hospital. Medical Officer Dr. Rachi Sikder confirmed that the patient was cleaned, bathed, and provided with primary care upon arrival at 3:00 PM.
"Following initial treatment, he was transferred to the Paikgachha Upazila Health Complex at 6:30 PM for advanced care," Dr. Sikder stated.
The patient is currently stable and receiving medical attention under the supervision of Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer Dr. Ahsanara Binte Ahmed. Local residents have praised the administration for its swift humanitarian intervention.
