A university student named Jobayed Hossain was allegedly killed over a love triangle involving his student Barjis Shabnam Barsha and her longtime boyfriend Mahir Rahman.

According to police, Barsha, a second-year student at Dhaka Mohanagar Mohila College, had been in a relationship with Mahir, a first-year student of Borhanuddin College, for nine years. The two grew up in the same neighborhood and had been close since childhood.

Recently, Barsha reportedly told Mahir that she liked her private tutor, Jobayed — though there was no romantic involvement or communication between them, police confirmed. Enraged by this revelation, Mahir and one of his friends allegedly killed Jobayed on Sunday afternoon.

Banshal Police Station OC Rafiqul Islam said Barsha admitted during preliminary interrogation that she had told Mahir about her feelings for Jobayed. However, investigators found no evidence of a personal relationship between Barsha and the victim.

Jobayed, a 2019–20 session student of Statistics at Jagannath University, was also president of the Cumilla District Students’ Welfare Association and a member of the BNP-backed Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal convening committee.

He was murdered around 4:45 PM Sunday at Barsha’s family residence on Nur Box Lane in Old Dhaka, where he had been tutoring her in science subjects for a year. Blood trails were found from the stairs to the third floor, where his body was discovered face-down.

Police said investigations are ongoing, and efforts to arrest Mahir and his friend are underway.
