Shantiganj Upazila is changing in the Sylhet-Sunamganj Road Project

The Sylhet-Sunamganj Regional Highway in Shantiganj Upazila of Sunamganj is changing 2 kilometers of Shantiganj Upazila Sadar in the four-lane project. In the meantime, the contractor has completed about 40 percent of the work of the project. The locals are also happy with the implementation of this project. They say, we want 60 kilometers of the Sylhet-Sunamganj Regional Road to be four-lane.

It is known that in the 2024-25 financial year, the contractor named MM Builders Engineers Limited has been awarded the project work under the Roads and Highways Department at a cost of 75 crore 93 lakh 28 thousand 252 taka. They started the project work from October last year and is scheduled to be completed in June 2027. The contractor is implementing the work of this project according to the rules and work orders.

On the spot, it was seen that the contractor is carrying out extensive work on the Sylhet-Sunamganj regional highway in the eastern part of Shantiganj Bazar in Shantiganj Upazila and in front of the Muktijoddha Complex. They have already completed about 40 percent of the work. The 2-kilometer stretch of the road from the Textile Institute to the Industrial and Technical Assistance Center (BITAC) in Ujanigaon will be upgraded from 2 lanes to 4 lanes. Among these, the pouring of 2 lanes from the southern side of the eastern part of the road from Shantiganj Bazar to Shantiganj Carp Hatchery has been completed.

Soil and dressing work is also underway on the northern side of this section. The project is progressing at a rapid pace. However, the contractor is facing some difficulties due to the presence of trees and electricity poles on the side of the road. The speed of work will increase if the trees and electricity poles are removed.

Locals and traders of Shantiganj Bazar said that since our road is small, passengers used to face accidents all the time. This area is known as a dangerous road. Many people have died in the past. Since the road is 4 lanes, road accidents will decrease here. Besides, we have many big institutions in this area. Everyone's movement will be safe. We want this road from Sylhet to Sunamganj to be made 4 lanes.

Sheikh Abdul Latif, Proctor of Sunamganj Science and Technology University, said, 'The 4-lane project is a blessing for us as the temporary campus and administrative building of Sunamganj Science and Technology University are in this area. Many accidents have occurred in this area only because the road is small. Now the road is being made 4 lanes. If the project is implemented properly, the people of this area including the students of Sunamganj Science and Technology University will benefit from it. ’

Shantiganj Press Club Organizing Secretary Hossain Ahmed said, ‘The east-west part of the Shantiganj Bazar area of the Sylhet-Sunamganj Regional Highway is located here, and there are important government administrative buildings, Sunamganj Science and Technology University, Upazila Parishad, Upazila Health Complex, Fire Services, Industrial and Technical Assistance Center (BITAC), Textile Institute, Abdul Majid College, Shantiganj Thana Bhaban, Shantiganj Press Club, Muktijuddha Complex, Shantiganj Carp Hatchery and many other government and private institutions. Thousands of people travel here every day. This project is a blessing for these institutions and the local people. We want the project to be completed quickly and with cooperation. ’

Engineer Shakib Al Hasan, Project Manager of the contractor MM Builders Engineers Limited, said, ‘I am working properly according to the rules and work orders. Officials of the Roads and Highways Department are constantly supervising this work. There is no scope for irregularities and corruption here. A few days ago, a brother spread confusion without understanding. Here, in front of the Muktijoddha Complex, the coke sheet of the expansion joint of our work had gone below 1.2 inches. He published this joint on social media as a crack. In reality, it is not a crack. It is the expansion joint of our casting. Later, the higher-ups came and saw it. They did not find any truth about the crack. There is no opportunity for irregularities and corruption in the work of the Roads and Highways Department.'

In this regard, Ataur Rahman, Deputy Assistant Engineer of the Roads and Highways (SOH) Department of Sunamganj, said, 'This work is very aesthetic and visually pleasing work. We have been monitoring it regularly. The quality of the work is very good. If the road is implemented, accidents will decrease on this 2-kilometer road.'
