Second-string Liverpool suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat at home to Crystal Palace in the League Cup fourth round on Wednesday, with Ismaila Sarr scoring twice for the visitors. The loss compounded the misery for Arne Slot's struggling side, marking their sixth loss in seven games across all competitions.
Despite the heavy rotation, the loss was historic for Liverpool, marking their first three-goal home defeat in a domestic cup without scoring since 1934. It was also Crystal Palace's third victory over the league champions this season.
Sarr scored in the 41st minute following a defensive error by Joe Gomez and doubled the lead just before halftime. Yeremy Pino provided an assist and then scored the third goal late in the 88th minute.
Liverpool ended the match with 10 men after Amara Nallo was sent off in the 79th minute.
Liverpool coach Arne Slot admitted the run of results is "not of Liverpool standards," calling the upcoming Premier League game against Aston Villa a "must-win."
Holders Newcastle United secured their quarter-final spot by beating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0. Other winners advancing include Arsenal (2-0 vs. Brighton), Manchester City (3-1 vs. Swansea), and Chelsea (4-3 vs. Wolverhampton Wanderers).
