Additional Commissioner Md Sarwar has been appointed to lead the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) on an interim basis until a permanent commissioner is named.
The decision was announced by Police Headquarters, a day after the resignation of former commissioner SM Sazzat Ali. In his resignation letter, Sazzat cited personal and family reasons for stepping down.
Sarwar currently holds the rank of supernumerary additional inspector general of police (IGP). He belongs to the 1984 BCS (Police) cadre.
In November 2016, Sarwar was dismissed from service while serving as an additional IGP during the tenure of the Awami League government. Following the fall of that administration during the 2024 uprising, the interim government reinstated him retrospectively.
He was appointed the 38th police commissioner of Dhaka on November 20, 2024.
The interim appointment was made by newly appointed IGP Md Ali Hossain Fakir, who assumed office on Wednesday.
