From Mayor to MP in Gazipur, Mujibur Rahman

His journey with BNP started from the student politics procession. One day, he was brought to the chair of the Kaliakair Municipality Administrator. While performing his duties, he won the trust of the people. Then came the election, and a huge victory. He became a familiar face named 'Mayor Mujibur' by being elected as the Mayor of Kaliakair Municipality not once, but three times in a row. This time, he became an MP (Member of Parliament) by contesting the BNP nomination in the 13th National Parliament election.

On Friday, in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office, Gazipur's Returning Officer and Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alam Hossain privately declared Md. Mujibur Rahman elected. Mujibur Rahman received 2 lakh 8 thousand 688 votes. His closest rival, Jamaat's Shah Alam Bakshi, received 1 lakh 49 thousand 553 votes.

Mojibur Rahman said, the party has put its trust in me and nominated me from Gazipur-1 constituency. I have kept that trust. This victory is not only mine, this victory belongs to the people of Kaliakoir, Konabari, Kashimpur and Basan in Gazipur-1 Asan. I will never forget the love that the people of the municipality have given me. Now my responsibility has increased even more. I want to take the development of the area forward from the national level.

His experience of working in the local government system for a long time has given him a special identity. His name has been associated with the development activities of roads, ghats, drainage, lighting, market management in the municipal area for a long time. He has also played an active role in various initiatives to facilitate citizen services, bringing discipline in tax collection, and strengthening cleanliness activities.

He has been elected as a member of parliament in the national parliamentary elections after receiving the nomination of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). Many see his transition from local government to national politics as a recognition of his experience.

Locals say that voters have relatively high confidence in leaders who have worked in the field for a long time. Experienced leadership is especially important in industrial areas and rapidly urbanizing areas. Voters in Kaliakoir, Konabari, Kashimpur and surrounding areas believe that the experience he has gained as a municipal mayor will be useful in the development of the area as a member of parliament.

Chairman of Mouchak Union Parishad and Jubo Dal leader Ariful Islam said, "We have been close to Mayor Mujibur for a long time. If there was any problem, we could talk directly. This direct communication politics has given him a different position as a public representative."
