Nalchiti Woman Sentenced to Two Years for Attempted Proxy Voting

A mobile court in Nalchiti sentenced a woman to two years of rigorous imprisonment on Thursday for attempting to cast a fraudulent vote during the 13th National Parliament Election.

The convict, identified as Chabina Begum (34), daughter of Shukur Ali Howlader, was detained at the Bharatkathi Government Primary School center in Dapadpia Union at approximately 4:00 PM.

Election officials grew suspicious of her identity and detained her for questioning. Following a summary trial at the scene, Judicial Magistrate Mukta Rani (Joint District Judge, Land Survey Tribunal, Jhalokati) handed down the sentence.

Under Section 74(5) of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), Chabina Begum was sentenced to two years of rigorous imprisonment and fined Tk 5,000. Failure to pay the fine will result in an additional 15 days of imprisonment. Local law enforcement has since transferred the convict to the district jail.
