


BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman has decided to take his oath as a Member of Parliament for the Dhaka-17 constituency, vacating the Bogra-6 seat. The decision follows his dual victory in the 13th National Parliamentary Election held on February 12, 2026.
According to the Election Commission (EC), the decision was confirmed on Monday, February 16. Under Section 19 of the Representation of the People Order (RPO), a candidate elected from multiple constituencies must choose one to represent and inform the EC in writing within 30 days of the official gazette publication.
He received 72,699 votes, defeating his nearest rival, SM Khaliduzzaman of Jamaat-e-Islami, who polled 68,300 votes. The voter turnout in this constituency was recorded at 44.31%.
He achieved a more decisive win with 216,284 votes. His closest competitor, Abidur Rahman Sohel of Jamaat-e-Islami, received 97,626 votes.
By choosing Dhaka-17, the Bogra-6 seat—a traditional stronghold for the Zia family—will now be declared vacant. The Election Commission is expected to announce a schedule for a by-election for the Bogra-6 seat in due course
