In a significant legal development regarding the high-profile e-commerce fraud case, a Dhaka court has sentenced Mohammad Rassel, the Managing Director of Evaly, and his wife, Shamima Nasrin, the company's Chairman, to an additional five years in prison each.
The verdict was delivered on Wednesday by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Zakir Hossain. The couple was found guilty in a fraud case related to the e-commerce platform.
Bench Assistant Md Nazmul Islam Talukder confirmed that, in addition to the five-year jail term, both Rassel and Nasrin were handed a fine of Tk 10,000 each. Should they fail to pay the fine, they will serve an extra three months in jail.
Due to the couple currently being absconding (not present), the court has issued arrest warrants against them.
This latest judgment brings the total cumulative sentence for the Evaly couple across all current cases to 17 years in prison in six different fraud cases, signaling a continued effort by authorities to address the widespread financial misconduct associated with the company.
