The Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) has expanded its Orthopedics Emergency Operation Theater (OT), alongside launching a modern library and renovated classrooms for the Anesthesia Department.
Chittagong City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain inaugurated the facilities as the chief guest on Monday (March 30) at 11 am.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Shahadat emphasized that such infrastructural upgrades are vital for modernizing medical services and ensuring faster treatment for patients. Organizers noted that the expanded OT will significantly improve emergency care for trauma and road accident victims across the Chittagong region.
The ceremony was attended by CMCH Director Brigadier General Dr. Md. Taslim Uddin, Head of Anesthesia Professor Dr. Harun Or Rashid, and several senior faculty members including Professor KM Baki Billah and Professor Dr. Mohammad Musa Miah.
Beyond clinical care, the new library and renovated classrooms are expected to enhance academic research and training for doctors. "These additions bring a new dimension to our medical education and research capabilities," a department official stated.
The expansion comes at a critical time. Although the Orthopedic Surgery Department officially has 88 beds, it consistently operates at triple capacity. Ward 26 and Ward 79 have seen over 500 new admissions since the start of March. Department Head Dr. Mohammad Kawsarul Matin highlighted that the facility serves as the primary trauma center for the entire Chittagong division.
