Five Bangladeshis have been killed in the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, authorities said. The government has started bringing back expatriates from Iran and other affected countries.

State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam made the announcement on Monday at a public event in Nagarkanda.

She said Bangladesh missions abroad are in constant contact with expatriates to ensure their safety. “We hope the situation will improve soon. Bangladesh supports a diplomatic solution to the conflict,” he added.

A total of 186 Bangladeshis returned home from Iran on Monday. The government plans to continue repatriation in phases for those willing to return.

At a separate memorial event marking the death anniversary of former BNP Secretary General KM Obaidur Rahman, the State Minister warned of action against anyone misusing her father’s name for personal gain. She said relevant authorities have already been notified.

She also called on party leaders and activists to strengthen organizational activities and uphold values against injustice.
