Police have recovered the burnt bodies of two people — including a 14-year-old madrasa student — from separate areas of Gazipur, a day after they were reported missing.
One body was recovered on Saturday morning from the Brindavan area of Telihati Union in Sreepur. The other was found in the Bhabanipur area of Sadar upazila later in the afternoon.
The deceased student was identified as Mahabur Islam Roni (14), son of Sohag Mia of Daulatpur village under Gouripur Police Station in Mymensingh. Roni lived with his family in a rented house owned by Mosharraf Hossain in Bhabanipur and studied at a local madrasa. According to police and family members, he had been missing since Friday evening.
Police said locals spotted a burnt body in Bhabanipur on Saturday morning and informed authorities. Roni’s family later identified the body. It has been sent for autopsy, and an investigation is underway.
In a separate incident, police recovered the burnt body of an unidentified youth, believed to be around 20 years old, from a secluded forest area in Brindavan, Sreepur.
Sreepur Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohammad Nasir Ahmed said police suspect the youth was killed elsewhere and the body was later taken to the forest and set on fire using flammable materials in an attempt to destroy evidence.
The body has been sent for autopsy. The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) have visited the scene to assist in identification and evidence collection. Police said DNA samples will be preserved, and missing persons reports in Gazipur and neighbouring districts are being reviewed.
Joydevpur Police Station officials said Roni had been missing since 9pm Friday. His relatives searched for him overnight before the body was found the next morning.
Police are investigating both incidents.
