Napoli fought back from a recent slump and an embarrassing Champions League defeat to beat visiting Inter Milan 3-1 on Saturday, a victory that propelled them back to the top of the Serie A table.
The win, secured at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, gives Napoli a one-point lead over AC Milan, who drew on Friday. The much-needed result puts an end to a difficult run where Napoli had lost two of their last three league games and suffered a 6-2 humiliation to PSV Eindhoven. Kevin de Bruyne injured himself hitting his fourth Serie A goal but Napoli went on to beat visiting Inter Milan 3-1 on Saturday, halting their slide and moving to the top of Serie A.
The scoring opened after 33 minutes when Napoli earned a penalty. An Inter player (presumably Hakan Çalhanoğlu, who was later involved in Inter's goal) fouled right-back Giovanni Di Lorenzo. While the Inter player was injured on the play and had to be substituted, a Napoli star (assuming Victor Osimhen or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia) converted the spot-kick for his fourth league goal.
However, the relief was short-lived as the scorer clutched his hamstring and was forced off the field immediately after scoring.
Piotr Zieliński (or another key midfielder) doubled the lead 54 minutes in with a powerful smash from the edge of the box. Inter's Hakan Çalhanoğlu pulled one back from the penalty spot five minutes later. Finally, Andre-Frank Anguissa drove home the third goal after 67 minutes to seal the vital 3-1 victory.
The defeat leaves Inter Milan in fourth place, with Roma having a chance to draw level with Napoli when they play Sassuolo on Sunday.
