In a somber gathering this morning, January 2, 2026, family members of the late BNP Chairperson and three-time former Prime Minister, Khaleda Zia, visited her final resting place at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar. This visit follows her burial on December 31, where she was laid to rest with full state honors beside her husband, former President Ziaur Rahman.
The family arrived at the grave premises at approximately 8:30 AM. The group included Khaleda Zia’s granddaughters: Zaima Rahman (daughter of Tarique Rahman), along with Zahia Rahman and Zafia Rahman (daughters of the late Arafat Rahman Koko). They were accompanied by Syeda Shamila Rahman, the widow of Arafat Rahman Koko.
Other prominent family members in attendance including, Selina Islam: Khaleda Zia’s younger sister, Professor Aminul Islam: Selina Islam’s husband, who attended in a wheelchair, Shamim Eskander’s Family: The family of her younger brother and Fatema Begum: Khaleda Zia’s long-time personal aide.
During the visit, Zaima Rahman placed a floral wreath and offered Surah-e-Fateha. The atmosphere was deeply emotional, complemented by the recitation of the Holy Quran by members of the Bangladesh Jatiotabadi Ulama Dal.
To ensure the family’s privacy, law enforcement implemented stringent security measures, restricting general access and asking BNP leaders and activists to remain outside the immediate perimeter.
Once the family departed, the gates were opened to the public. This resulted in a massive surge of mourners, many wearing black badges, who gathered to pay their respects to the "uncompromising leader" following her historic funeral at Manik Mia Avenue, which saw a turnout of millions.
