At least 15 people including three children were killed on Saturday when Russian forces struck the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia with five guided glide bombs.
The attack hit residential buildings also leaving at least 16 people injured and several others trapped under rubble. Rescue workers and emergency teams were actively conducting search operations throughout the day.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned the attack and stating that 13 other regions were also targeted overnight. The strikes follow recent Russian attacks across Ukraine in a strike in Kramatorsk that killed 33 people and another in Pryluky that left 22 dead. The UN reports a 55% surge in civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of this year.
Zelensky renewed his call for firmer international pressure on Moscow to halt the escalation also emphasizing that Russia interprets any easing of pressure as a signal to continue its aggression.
Zaporizhzhia, home to over 700,000 people and located less than 16 kilometers from the front lines also remains a frequent target of Russian air strikes and drone attacks.
