World Environment Day was observed in Paikgachha, Khulna, on Friday, June 5. To mark the occasion, the Upazila administration partnered with local NGOs, including Nabalok Parishad and Sushilan, to organize a rally, a discussion, and a tree-planting program.
The day began with a colorful rally through the main roads of the Upazila Sadar. Following the rally, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury presided over a discussion at the Upazila Parishad auditorium. The event focused on the theme, "Protecting the climate through the inspiration of nature, building the future."
During the discussion, speakers emphasized the urgent need to protect the Sundarbans—the world's largest mangrove forest—to combat climate change and prevent regional environmental disasters. They also urged the public to plant more trees and stop using single-use plastics in their daily lives.
Upazila Forest Officer Prabir Kumar Dutta delivered the welcome address. Special guests included Assistant Commissioner (Land) Md. Fazle Rabbi and Upazila Agriculture Officer Ekramul Hossain. Several local NGO representatives also addressed the gathering.
The program concluded with UNO Wasiuzzaman Chowdhury planting fruit saplings on the Upazila Parishad grounds.
