A day-long workshop on fire safety, earthquake preparedness, and high-rise building management was held at Pabna Science and Technology University (PUST) on Thursday. Organized by the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), the session targeted teachers, students, and officials to bolster campus disaster readiness.
Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Nazrul Islam inaugurated the event as the chief guest. He emphasized that since disasters are unpredictable, mental and physical preparation is essential. "Awareness is our first line of defense. This training is a crucial step in ensuring our community can respond collectively and effectively to emergencies," he stated.
Special guest and Treasurer, Professor Dr. Md. Shamim Ahsan, highlighted the importance of adhering to building codes. He urged the administration and citizens to ensure proper material quality during construction and advocated for mandatory fire extinguishers and water tanks in all buildings. "Citizens must be trained to use safety equipment so they can act before professional help arrives," he added.
The workshop featured practical demonstrations led by Pabna Fire Service Station Officer Shafiul Islam and Inspector Faruk Ahmed.
The session was presided over by IQAC Director Professor Dr. Md. Shamim Reza. Other attendees included Proctor Professor Dr. Kamruzzaman Khan, Director of Student Advisory Professor Dr. Md. Rashedul Haque, and various hall provosts and department chairs. The program was coordinated by IQAC Additional Director Professor Dr. Md. Asfaqur Rahman.
