Two Workers Killed in Chittagong WASA Project Landslide

Two workers died and two others were injured after a soil collapse during excavation for a WASA sewerage project on the Agrabad Access Road early Thursday morning.

The incident occurred around 4:00 AM near the Singapore Market area. According to Fire Service Deputy Director Mohammad Jasim Uddin four workers were buried while digging a trench for water pipes. Fire service units rescued the men and rushed them to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where doctors declared two of them dead.

The deceased have been identified as Rakib and Sowkhon (originally reported as Snow) the latter hailing from Dinajpur. The injured workers, Sagar and Ershad are currently receiving treatment in the CMCH casualty ward.

Chittagong WASA Supervisory Engineer Md. Ariful Islam confirmed that the work was part of an ongoing sewerage project managed by the Chinese firm Sino Hydro.

"We have requested a formal accident report from the contractor" Islam stated. He added that officials are in contact with the victims' families to arrange for compensation.
