A man allegedly hacked his elder sister to death following a dispute over money in the port city’s Halishahar area on Monday night.

The incident occurred around midnight in the Eidgaon Boro Pukur Dakshin Par area. The victim, 48-year-old Chenwara Begum, was the wife of local resident Saber Ahmed.

The victim’s son, Sekandar Hossain Robin, stated that he and his father were at the mosque for Tarawih prayers when the attack took place. Upon returning, Robin saw locals apprehending his uncle, Jane Alam, who was reportedly holding a blood-stained knife.

Kazi Muhammad Sultan Ahsan Uddin, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Halishahar Police Station, said the siblings became embroiled in a heated argument over unpaid debts. During the altercation, Jane Alam allegedly attacked his sister with a sharp weapon, killing her instantly.

While police were escorting the suspect to the station, an agitated crowd blocked the vehicle and attempted to assault him. Officers eventually managed to bring the situation under control.

The body has been sent to the Chittagong Medical College (CMC) Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Police confirmed that legal proceedings are currently underway.
