Police have recovered a valuable touchstone idol of Goddess Kali worth approximately Tk.1 crore along with stolen gold and silver ornaments following a heist at the historic 'Puratan Kalibari' (Old Kali Temple) near Sadar Hospital in Faridpur town. Four members of an organized theft gang have been arrested.
Faridpur Superintendent of Police (SP) Shahriar Mohammad Miyaji announced the breakthrough during a press conference at his office on Sunday afternoon.
According to police, thieves broke the temple's locks on the night of September 19 and stole the idol alongside other traditional valuables. Using information technology and intelligence leads, law enforcement officers conducted targeted raids across Alfadanga and Boalmari upazilas also leading to the arrest of the four suspects.
Following interrogations the authorities raided a location where the stolen items were buried underground. Police successfully dug up and recovered the 20-kilogram touchstone Kali idol, five bhoris of gold jewelry, 30 bhoris of silver ornaments, six brass idols and a small quantity of melted gold (eight anas).
Police confirmed that a legal case has been filed and further proceedings against the arrested suspects are currently underway.
