Lionel Messi scored his 100th goal for Inter Miami as the club beat Mexico's Cruz Azul 2-0 to win the Campeones Cup at Nu Stadium in Florida on Wednesday.
Messi headed in a cross from Luis Suárez in the 24th minute with reaching the milestone in his 115th appearance for Miami across all competitions. Fittingly, the goal came against the same opponent he scored against on his Miami debut in July 2023 when a stoppage-time free kick secured a 2-1 win.
Casemiro doubled the lead in the 81st minute with heading in a corner from Messi. The Brazilian midfielder has now scored four goals, all headers in his last five matches.
"Leo told me he'd make me a champion, so he kept his word" said Miami coach Cristian Gonzalez.
The win marked Miami's fourth trophy since Messi joined in 2023, following the Leagues Cup (2023), Supporters' Shield (2024) and MLS Cup (2025).
Messi 39, is Argentina's all-time top scorer with 125 goals. He announced his retirement from international football last month and will make his farewell appearance for Argentina in a friendly against Benin on October 6.
Inter Miami, second in the Eastern Conference returns to MLS action Sunday against San Diego FC at Nu Stadium.
