Former MP Golam Faruque Ovi has decided to come home in December and he might participate in the 13th parliamentary elections to be held in February as an independent. A source close to Ovi has told the Daily Business Times today.
Ovi left the country in 2002, a year after his defeat in the 8th parliamentary elections in 2001. First he went to England via Thailand, but later in 2003 he sought political asylum in Canada and settled there. He has been in North America for more than two decades, fearing that he could face political reprisals and abduction by the government agencies if he returns to the country.
Golam Faruque Ovi, the youngest MP of the 7th Parliament, was elected from the Barisal-2 constituency in 1996 on a Jatiya Party ticket. His efforts resulted in the acquisition of many projects and significant funding from the international donor agencies for the development of his constituency. As a result of his endeavors, the Barisal Government Veterinary College was established in Babuganj. In a later development, the college became an official branch of Patuakhali Science and Technology University.
