A court has banned Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Administrator Mohammad Ejaz from leaving the country as part of an investigation into allegations of corruption, bribery and various irregularities.
The court of Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Judge Md. Sabbir Faiz passed the order on Sunday (February 1) following an application by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). Bench Assistant Md. Riaz Hossain of the concerned court confirmed the matter.
On behalf of the ACC, the agency's Assistant Director Md. Ashiqur Rahman filed the application seeking a ban on Mohammad Ejaz's leaving the country. The application states that allegations of widespread irregularities, corruption and bribery through abuse of power against the administrator are currently under investigation.
The allegations against Mohammad Ejaz include Mirpur Gabtoli Pashur Hat lease, e-rickshaw project, occupation of Borak Tower or Hotel Sheraton, allocation of shops in Banani Raw Market, construction and allocation of shops in the parking lot of Khilgaon Taltola Supermarket, van service of the City Corporation and allocation of shops on the sidewalk, and various other irregularities.
The ACC application further mentioned that although a notice was given to Mohammad Ejaz to take his statement as per the Anti-Corruption Commission Act and Rules, he did not appear at the ACC office. The agency has learned from reliable sources that the person involved in the allegations may flee the country. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to cancel his travel abroad for the sake of a fair investigation of the allegations.
After hearing both parties, the court granted the ACC application and issued this order banning his departure from the country.
