Former Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan facing trial in Bangladesh over graft and money laundering charges has been arrested in Qatar as officials confirmed on Sunday.
Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Deputy Director Md Akhtarul Islam confirmed the arrest, stating that further details regarding the arrest circumstances will be disclosed during an upcoming official press conference.
The ACC filed two corruption cases against Hannan and his wife, Tahmida Begum in July 2025. Investigations revealed that Hannan accumulated illegal assets worth Tk.32.85 million beyond known sources of income and conducted suspicious transactions totaling Tk.276.37 million across six bank accounts.
His wife was separately accused of acquiring illegal assets worth Tk.19.19 million assisted by Hannan with suspicious transactions recorded across 32 bank accounts. The ACC also uncovered overseas assets and businesses linked to the family in Qatar, Dubai and Canada.
Prior to his arrest, a Dhaka court imposed a travel ban on Hannan and his family in May 2025 ordering the freezing of dozens of bank accounts, land and multiple residential flats connected to him and his associates.
Hannan served as Chief of Air Staff from June 2021 until his retirement in June 2024. He faces charges under the Anti-Corruption Commission Act, Prevention of Corruption Act and Prevention of Money Laundering Act.
