Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad (101) has been admitted to the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur for observation. His aide Sufi Yusoff confirmed that he was hospitalized on Tuesday night though an official medical diagnosis is still pending.
The hospitalization comes just two days after the death of his wife and 70 years life partner Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohamad Ali. A doctor and public health advocate Siti Hasmah passed away on Monday at the age of 100. Mahathir was visibly overcome with grief during her funeral with tearfully expressing his shock over her passing.
Mahathir Mohamad served as Malaysia’s prime minister for over two decades across two terms also has a history of heart condition and bypass surgeries. He has experienced multiple hospital admissions in recent years including treatment for a hip fracture earlier this year.
