Tensions escalated sharply in Eastern Europe overnight as Russia launched a massive aerial assault on Kyiv, prompting Poland to scramble fighter jets to protect its borders. The strike, involving approximately 500 drones and 40 missiles, targeted critical energy infrastructure and residential areas, leaving at least one person dead and 28 others injured.

In Kyiv, Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported widespread power outages and heating failures as temperatures dropped below freezing.1 Emergency services were forced to evacuate 68 residents from a retirement home in the Darnytskyi district. Polish military officials confirmed that their air force and ground-based defense systems were activated as a "preventative" measure, though no violation of Polish airspace occurred.

The timing of the attack is significant, coming just 24 hours before President Volodymyr Zelensky is scheduled to meet with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump in Florida. Zelensky condemned the strikes, stating that Russia's actions prove they prefer violence over diplomacy. Meanwhile, a new 20-point peace draft—reportedly including a "free economic zone" in Donbas and security guarantees from NATO—is expected to be the centerpiece of Sunday's high-stakes discussions.

Diplomats are closely watching the upcoming Mar-a-Lago meeting between Zelensky and Trump. While Zelensky describes his new peace draft as a "foundational document," Trump has maintained a firm stance, stating the plan requires his personal approval before moving forward.
