Pop star Britney Spears was arrested in California on suspicion of driving under the influence after police stopped her for erratic driving late Wednesday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers pulled over Spears at around 9:30 p.m. local time after receiving reports of a vehicle speeding and driving dangerously on U.S. Route 101.
Authorities said Spears was driving a black BMW 430i southbound when officers stopped the vehicle near the Westlake Boulevard exit in Ventura County.
Police said she was the only person in the car and appeared to show signs of impairment. Officers conducted field sobriety tests at the scene before taking her into custody on suspicion of DUI.
Spears was later taken to a medical facility where blood tests were conducted under California’s DUI procedures. Officials confirmed she was not admitted to hospital and was released from custody early Thursday morning. Her vehicle was towed following the incident.
Authorities said the investigation is ongoing and chemical test results are still pending.
Spears is scheduled to appear at Ventura County Superior Court on May 4, where the case will proceed depending on the test results.
A representative for the singer described the incident as “unfortunate” and said Spears intends to cooperate fully with authorities. The representative added that her family and close friends are working to support her well-being.
Spears remains one of the most successful pop artists in modern music. She is known for hit songs such as ...Baby One More Time, Toxic, Gimme More, Womanizer, and Stronger.
In 2023, she published her memoir The Woman in Me, reflecting on her career and her 13-year conservatorship, which ended in 2021 after the global Free Britney movement.
Following news of the arrest, Spears’ Instagram account appeared to be temporarily unavailable.
