The government has appointed Dr. Md. Sabbir Mostafa Khan a professor at the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) as the new chairman of the Dhaka Water Supply and Sewerage Authority (WASA).

The Local Government Division issued a notification on Sunday announcing his three-year appointment under Section 7(1) of the WASA (Amendment) Act 2025. Dr. Khan currently heads BUET’s Department of Water Resources Engineering.

His leadership comes at a critical time for Dhaka WASA, which faces mounting challenges in ensuring safe drinking water, modernizing the city’s sewage system, mitigating chronic waterlogging and addressing climate change impacts. Sector experts view this appointment as a strategic shift, placing a seasoned specialist at the helm of the capital's water management rather than a traditional administrator.

With nearly three decades of experience in civil engineering river management, and urban drainage Dr. Khan brings extensive academic and practical expertise to the role. He earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering and water resources from BUET before completing a second master's and a Ph.D. at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Dr. Khan joined BUET as a lecturer in 1997 and has steadily advanced to professor and departmental head dedicating his career to water resources strategy flood control and climate adaptation.
