Three people were killed in a mob lynching in Kaliakoir, Gazipur, after locals accused them of attempting to steal cattle. An angry crowd also set fire to a pickup van allegedly used by the group.

The incident occurred around 4:00am on Sunday, May 10, in the Bagchala Bazar area of Fulbaria Union under Kaliakoir upazila. The identities of the deceased were not immediately known.

According to police and local sources, a group of 10 to 12 suspected thieves arrived in the area in a pickup van late Saturday night. They allegedly attempted to steal cattle from the house of Abu Bakkar Siddique.

Sensing the incident, the homeowner alerted nearby residents. Locals then chased the group and detained three men. Police said the detainees were found with lock-picking tools, a chapati and a machete.

The crowd later beat the three men, leaving them critically injured. The pickup van was also set on fire.

After receiving information, members of Kaliakoir Police Station and the Fulbaria Police Camp went to the scene and rescued the injured. They were taken to Gazipur Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmed Medical College Hospital.

Doctors declared one person dead on arrival. The other two died around 8:00am while undergoing treatment.

Officer-in-Charge of Kaliakoir Police Station, Shahidul Islam, said the bodies were sent to the hospital morgue for autopsy and legal action was underway.
