The re-excavation work of the historic Zia Canal in Golapnagar area of Mokarimpur Union under Bheramara upazila was officially inaugurated on Saturday afternoon.

The program was organized jointly by the Bheramara Upazila Administration and the Disaster Management Department.

Bheramara Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rafiqul Islam presided over the event. BNP leader and reserved seat MP for the Kushtia-Meherpur-Chuadanga region, Farida Yasmin, attended as the chief guest.

Among others present were Assistant Commissioner (Land) Dr. Gazi Ashiq Bahar, Bheramara Upazila BNP Convener Advocate Touhidul Islam Alam, Member Secretary Shajahan Ali, Officer-in-Charge of Bheramara Police Station Jahedur Rahman, and Project Implementation Officer (PIO) Mizanur Rahman.

Speaking at the event, Farida Yasmin said the canal was originally excavated during the tenure of former President Ziaur Rahman to support local farmers and improve irrigation facilities. She said the re-excavation project would help restore water flow and benefit agriculture in the area.

According to local administration sources, around 1,600 meters of the canal will be re-excavated under a Project Implementation Committee (PIC) at an estimated cost of Tk 7.8 million.

Local residents expressed hope that the project would improve irrigation, reduce waterlogging, and support farming activities in surrounding areas.
