Police have confirmed the real identity of the notorious serial killer known as ‘Samrat’, who was arrested over a series of brutal murders in Savar. Investigators say his real name is Sabuj Sheikh, not Mashiur Rahman Khan Samrat as previously known.

According to police, Sabuj Sheikh is the son of Panna Sheikh. He is the second among three brothers and has four sisters. His ancestral home and birthplace are in Mouchamandra village of Haldia Union, under Louhajang police station in Munshiganj district. His elder sister is named Sharmin.

Initial investigations have revealed disturbing details about the crimes. Police say Sabuj lured homeless men and women from different areas to abandoned buildings in Savar, where he trapped them for sexual exploitation while keeping their identities hidden. Investigators allege that when the women became involved with others, or when others became involved with them, Sabuj would become enraged and kill them.

Police are currently verifying his confessional statements. In the latest incident, police said Sabuj took a homeless young woman, Tania alias Sonia, to the abandoned Savar Municipal Community Center three to four days before the crime. There, another homeless young man allegedly had sexual relations with the woman. Enraged, Sabuj first took the young man to the second floor of the building and killed him. He then killed the woman on the ground floor, carried her body to a second-floor toilet, and burned both bodies together.

When produced before the court on Monday, police sought a 10-day remand, during which Sabuj reportedly confessed to involvement in six murders.

Police records show that Sabuj’s first known murder took place on July 4, 2025, when he strangled an elderly woman, Asma Begum, near the Savar Model Mosque. On August 29, he allegedly killed a young man inside the abandoned Savar Municipal Community Center and burned the body.

About a month later, on October 11, the body of another woman was recovered from the same building, which Sabuj later confessed to killing. On December 19, he allegedly killed another young man at the same location.

Most recently, his name surfaced in the killing of two people, including a teenager, whose bodies were burned on Saturday night. Police described the entire sequence of crimes as highly planned and extremely brutal.

The investigation is ongoing, and police fear the number of victims may rise. Experts warn that individuals who appear harmless or mentally unstable can also pose serious threats, urging the public to remain cautious when dealing with strangers.
