A joint forces operation led by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a 28-year-old man, identified as Akash, with a foreign-made pistol, a magazine, and one round of ammunition in Sreepur, Gazipur.
The raid took place around 10:30 PM on Friday in the Peer Ali College area of Maona Bazar. According to Lieutenant Colonel Nafis, commander of the Porabari RAB-1 camp, the operation was launched following intelligence reports that a group was preparing for a robbery in the area.
Initial investigations reveal that Akash, who operates a scrap metal business, used his shop as a front for an illegal arms rental ring. RAB officials stated that the suspect allegedly smuggled weapons across the border and rented them out to local criminals for various offenses.
"We recovered the loaded firearm hidden under a drum in a corner of his scrap metal shop," said Lt. Col. Nafis. "Akash is already out on bail for previous murder and weapons charges. We are interrogating him to identify his associates and the full extent of his smuggling network."
Authorities confirmed that intelligence surveillance has been intensified in the region ahead of the upcoming elections. Legal proceedings against the suspect are currently underway at the local police station.
