In a bid to end a 60-year wait for a World Cup title, England has entrusted its fate to a German coach.

Thomas Tuchel’s appointment was not universally well-received when announced in 2024. Waking up to harsh headlines in the British press, the former PSG, Chelsea, and Bayern Munich manager joked at his unveiling, “I’m sorry I have a German passport.”

Critics initially questioned the decision to gamble on a foreign manager. However, many overlooked Tuchel’s impressive resume, which includes lifting the Champions League and winning domestic titles in three different countries.

The main controversy stemmed from the historical soccer rivalry between England and Germany. Since winning the 1966 World Cup final against West Germany, England has frequently struggled against the Germans in major tournaments.

Despite this, the debate over Tuchel’s nationality quickly faded, aided by his calm media presence and a flawless winning record in World Cup qualifying.

Time will tell if Tuchel becomes a hero or a villain. If England fails at the upcoming World Cup, his nationality may become a talking point again. However, past England managers have faced severe criticism regardless of their origin. Tuchel’s predecessor, Gareth Southgate, helped fans reconnect with the national team but still faced intense abuse during the 2024 European Championship. Southgate ultimately stepped down after leading England to back-to-back Euros finals and the 2018 World Cup semifinals.

If Tuchel can finally end England’s trophy drought, he is poised to become a national hero.

“Everyone in the squad and the staff believes we can win it,” said midfielder Kobbie Mainoo.

Setting a strict team-first tone, Tuchel recently shocked fans by dropping major names like Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, and Trent Alexander-Arnold from his World Cup squad. This bold move proved he will not be swayed by public opinion—a common pitfall for previous managers.

“Everything I know about international football tells me that tournaments are won by teams, not individuals,” Tuchel stated.

Conversely, 35-year-old midfielder Jordan Henderson was a surprise inclusion. “There’s so much talent, but for us as a squad, it’s about being together and working every day to achieve our dreams,” Henderson said.

Tuchel is the 14th coach tasked with ending England’s 60-year major trophy drought. With global stars like Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Declan Rice, he has enough talent at his disposal to make ruthless choices.

“I love the tough decisions because they bring clarity and an edge,” Tuchel said. “We will always try to build the best group, not just collect the best talents.”
