The match between Manchester City and Liverpool, celebrating Pep Guardiola's 1000th game it’s a major milestone. Manchester City delivered a commanding 3-0 victory over defending champions Liverpool at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, a result that celebrated manager Pep Guardiola’s 1000th match in charge.
The win saw the Citizens climb to second place in the Premier League table, narrowing the gap with leaders Arsenal to four points.
Liverpool, despite a midweek Champions League victory against Real Madrid, struggled to find their rhythm from the kick-off. Manager Arne Slot's side failed to create significant meaningful chances throughout the game.
City were awarded a penalty in the 9th minute after Jérémy Doku was fouled by Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili. However, Mamardashvili dived to his left to deny Erling Haaland from the spot.
The missed penalty continued a poor record for City, who have now failed to score from four of their last five penalties against Liverpool. Mamardashvili, the Georgian shot-stopper, maintained his exceptional form, having saved six penalties since the start of the 2023-24 season—the most in Europe’s top five leagues.
The deadlock was broken when Matheus Nunes delivered a cross from the right wing, which Haaland headed in for the opening goal. The report states that City "stretched the lead" through further goals from Nico González and Jérémy Doku, securing the 3-0 scoreline. Haaland, the league's top scorer, recorded his 14th goal in 11 Premier League matches this season.
He has now tallied 28 goals in 18 games across all competitions for club and country this season. This goal brought his Premier League career total to 99 goals in 108 matches.
