A union-level leader of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) was shot in Keraniganj, on the outskirts of Dhaka, on Thursday night.

The victim, Hasan Mollah, general secretary of Hazratpur Union BNP, was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in critical condition.

The shooting occurred around 9:00pm outside the BNP office in Ward 9 of Hazratpur Union. According to Keraniganj Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Saiful Alam, Hasan was returning home after attending a religious sermon in Dhalikandi when assailants opened fire on him and fled the scene.

“He was shot by unidentified attackers and was immediately taken to Dhaka for treatment,” the OC said.

Police said Hasan was admitted to DMCH at around 10:45pm. An investigation is under way, and efforts are being made to identify and arrest those involved.
