In a deeply personal and moving tribute, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman mourned the passing of his mother, party Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia, describing her as both a "tender, loving mother" and an "unbreakable guardian" of the nation.
In a statement shared on his verified social media, Tarique Rahman reflected on the dual legacy of the three-time Prime Minister as a family matriarch and a symbol of democratic resistance.
Tarique Rahman emphasized that while the world knew her as the "Mother of Democracy" and a fierce opponent of autocracy and fascism, to him, she was a source of infinite strength. He highlighted her life of immense sacrifice, noting that she endured relentless persecution, repeated arrests, and the denial of critical medical care, yet never wavered in her commitment to the people of Bangladesh.
Tarique recalled her as a compassionate mother who provided shelter and courage to her family even during their darkest hours. He noted that after losing her husband (Ziaur Rahman) and her youngest son (Arafat Rahman Koko), the people of Bangladesh became her "very soul" and purpose.
The Acting Chairman stated that her life of patriotism and resistance would remain permanently etched in the democratic conscience of the country. Expressing gratitude for the global outpouring of love, Tarique Rahman requested the nation to pray for the eternal peace of her departed soul.
