Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus addressed the nation on Thursday night to announce the passing of Sharif Osman Hadi, the spokesperson of Inqilab Moncho and a frontline hero of the July Uprising. Hadi breathed his last at a Singapore hospital after battling gunshot injuries sustained in a December 12 attack.
In a televised speech broadcast by BTV, Prof. Yunus declared Saturday a day of national mourning. The national flag will fly at half-mast across all government, private, and diplomatic buildings. Special prayers (Dua) will be held in mosques nationwide after Jumma prayers tomorrow, with similar observances in places of worship for all religions.
The Chief Adviser vowed that no leniency would be shown toward the perpetrators of this "brutal murder," promising that the maximum punishment would be ensured. Additionally, Prof. Yunus announced that the state will take full responsibility for the welfare of Hadi’s wife and his only child.
Prof. Yunus expressed his gratitude to the Singaporean government and Foreign Minister Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan for their personal care and professionalism during Hadi’s treatment. The Chief Adviser described Hadi’s death as an "irreparable loss" to Bangladesh's democratic journey against fascism and hegemony.
